The Day We Learned About Carrots

So this spring, Brooke was in charge of planting the carrot seeds.  She somehow successfully managed to put about one thousand tiny carrot seeds in a space about 12 inches long and 1/8 of an inch wide.  Needless to say, the seeds were much closer together than the recommended spacing.  Somehow the carrots still grew and even poked out of the ground like they were supposed to, minus the part where they were plastered against each other.  It kind of reminded me of carrot acne… gross, but true.

So throughout our fall harvest, I made several attempts to pull them out of the dirt, but they were nested so close together that it never worked.  So I decided to leave them be and hoped they would serve as fertilizer and eventually decompose.

Today however, Katelyn and her BFF Sara discovered the carrot nest and decided to turn it into an excavation project.  They dug and dug and proudly brought their bounty to me with frozen little fingers but very happy smiles.  They were so excited and the carrots were so repulsive.

The carrots were deformed, discolored and some even appeared to have little legs or at least kneecaps.  Love is blind however, so the girls didn’t seem to notice.  We may not have planted or cared for the carrots correctly, but they definitely served their purpose.

The girls happily washed and categorized their treasures.  They were so cute about it, it almost made me forget how repulsive the carrots actually were.

The girls celebrated and defrosted with some hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and marshmallows.  I was so glad they didn’t ask to eat any carrots.

How wonderful that they were able to harvest the "mutant" carrots. Hot chocolate makes everything better! Happy Thanksgiving! Love you!

Those look nasty. Makes me want to second guess EVER eating a carrot again. Please never plant CHOCOLATE, as you might scare me away from that as well. :)
