The Day Katelyn Turned 10

Since we are less than two months away from Katelyn’s 11th birthday, I decided I should probably document her 10th birthday.  I never really documented summer last year because I got so sick right after we got back from our trip.  Fortunately, photos are patient and waited for me.  So let the retro documentation begin.

Katelyn was so excited to turn 10.  We had only been home from our Salt Lake/Boise trip for three days, when it was time party.  She requested McDonald’s take out for breakfast and had a fun relaxing morning with us.

Just before lunch, she requested a trip to Best Buy.  She had been saving her money and wanted to go buy a Kindle Fire.  After she made her purchase, we stopped by Krispy Kreme for their birthday doughnut.  The only thing missing was blue frosting, or it would have looked just like the doughnut cake she requested.

She had a great afternoon playing with her new “toy” and getting ready for her party that night.

Her party gets its own post, so I will rewind to the night before her birthday when we celebrated at home with our little family.

After playing outside with friends most of the day she came in to get ready for dinner.  When she came downstairs we surprised her with her decorations and the “birthday meal” that she’d chosen a few days before.  She requested homemade deep fried teriyaki chicken with sticky rice.

After dinner it was time for family presents.

Katelyn had lots of help opening her gifts.

Brooke and Emily were so excited for her to open the gifts they had for her.

They were also excited for her to open up her new camera so she could take silly pictures of them.

Brooke was also so excited to give Katelyn the card she made for her.  She spent days working on it, making sure every detail was perfect.  Katelyn loved it!

We also revamped a tradition by switching to a different birthday book.  On their birthdays we always read the “Birthday Monsters” by Sandra Boynton.  It is a cute story but as the girls got older I decided I didn’t just want the book to be about birthdays but to also include a message about how wonderful it is to celebrate someone and to be celebrated.  So Katelyn received her own inscribed copy of Dr. Seuss's “Happy Birthday to You” book.  They all loved the story and were ok with the tradition growing along with them.

It was such a great day celebrating an amazing young lady.  We love you Katelyn and hope your birthday reminded you of how special you are and how much you are loved.
