The Day We Went to Lagoon

Lagoon - Gram Pop Kate Brooke 8-13-09aDuring our trip to Utah, we went to Lagoon with Gram, Pop and Uncle Russell.  Since Brooke had done so well at Silverwood just a few weeks earlier, I knew she would love Lagoon and would have NO problem with the rides.

Wrong.

Brooke on Lady Bug Bop 8-13-09aI seriously must have not been thinking, because when Katelyn said she wanted to start with her favorite ride, the Ladybug Bop, I thought it would be a great first ride of the day for Brooke too.   The Ladybug Bop is one of those rides that takes you up and spins you a little and then lets you drop, over and over.  Like I said, I don’t know what I was thinking.  Brooke is still scarred from the experience.  She was terrified and did a scream that I have never heard from her before.  Her teeth were gritted and her terror was immense.  On the way down the last time, she dug her fingernails into my arm as she hung on for dear life… I totally deserved it.

Lagoon - Kate and Brooke 8-13-09aAfter that we headed over to her “favorite” rides from Silverwood because we knew she would love them.

Wrong.

The emotional trauma from the Ladybug Bop (she calls it Brooke on the dragonfly 8-13-09athe Ladybug Bok), carried over to each and every ride we got her to try until she just didn’t want to try any more.

At that point, Katelyn just went on the rides and tried to show her how fun it was, but Brooke was not going to be fooled again.  She was happy watching but Katelyn missed having her ride buddy and didn’t want to ride anymore “baby” rides if Brooke wasn’t going try it again.

Lagoon - Kate and Dad 8-13-09aThen Katelyn found the “OdySea” ride and she was hooked.  She managed to get all of us (except Brooke) to ride it with her several times.  Since it was a hot day, the spraying water part of the ride was welcomed.  Brooke was fascinated by the ride and told us multiple times she wanted to go on it… but she chickened out every time.  I didn’t dare push it since she had been so traumatized earlier.

Lagoon - Kate and Brooke 8-13-09cThen we finally found a ride that Brooke was willing to give the old college try… thank goodness there weren’t any lines because the girls seriously drove these cars about a million times.  Pop finally figured out a way to slow them down… the giant blue snow cone was too amazing to resist.

Brooke on the baby boats 8-13-09bThe next ride that Brooke truly embraced were the timeless baby boats.  Katelyn was too big for this one but Brooke was brave and loved it.  The bell never got old and the steering wheel was too much fun for her to resist.

The picture on the left was taken 31 years ago on the same boats…  My cousin Paige (left – age 3 1/2) and I (right – age 2 1/2) loved to drive those boats even before they had fancy paint and seat belts.

Lagoon - Kate Pop Brooke 8-13-09aThe other “ride du jour” was the red wagon that Pop pushed around all day.  The girls loved their chariot and were happy for a ride to each ride.

We were so glad that uncle Russell came with us – he even rode the Puff the Little Fire Dragon Coaster with Katelyn…. talk about a GREAT great-uncle.

Lagoon - Kyle 8-13-09aKyle and Russell had a great time on the new roller coaster “Wicked.”  Unfortunately I didn’t get a picture of them on it, but I got one of Kyle on his other favorite ride – the train.  You can see the joy can’t you?

Pop and Kate - Lagoon Go Karts 8-13-09aPop and Katelyn continued their two year tradition of racing the Go-Karts together.  They had a blast and had everyone beat until the end when a teenage girl came flying past them.  Katelyn loved it and was so proud of Pop’s racing skills.

Brooke's wagon nap 8-13-09aThis is what she did instead.  Nothing like a good wagon nap to recharge your batteries.  I wish there had been enough room for me in there.

Kate on the Bat 8-13-09aKatelyn’s favorite rollercoaster was The Bat – she loved it and said she is ready for more roller coasters as long as they are not scarier than that one.

The girls also absolutely loved driving the bumper cars.  Brooke is used to being a passenger in their Barbie Jeep so she didn’t want to drive the bumper cars, she let her sister do the driving Lagoon - Brooke and Kate bumper cars 8-13-09aand she was the navigator.  Katelyn’s driving skills were pretty impressive… boys would keep chasing their car and she would manage to get away unscathed.  I hope she continues to run from boys for a long time.

This last picture of them in the bumper cars is one of my favorites.  During one of their first rides, Brooke started sticking her leg out of the car – so we all directed her to keep her leg inside.  Unfortunately we all did it at the same time, along with the ride attendant.  She was not happy about the reprimand, so the next time on the ride, this was the pose she did for me when I tried to take their picture.  It reminded me way too much of Nemo when his dad tells him not to touch the boat and he defiantly does so anyway.  Glimpses of the future I am sure.

We had a great day and the girls are already planning our Lagoon trip for next year.  Brooke has asked us repeatedly, “Do you remember the Lady Bug Bok? How it went up and down and up and down…”  She clearly remembers the ride and is sure not to let us forget it either.
