As Katelyn and her class entered the home stretch of 1st grade and prepared to spread their wings as 2nd graders, it was also time for their highly anticipated “Freedom Day” when their butterflies would also spread their wings and fly away.
After spending weeks watching their caterpillars go through each stage of metamorphosis, 25 (give or take a few) butterflies emerged and were ready to be set free. The class was so excited for this event and we were so glad that Gram and Pop could be there to share it with us too!
When the day finally came, it was beautiful and sunny but a very windy day. To begin the adventure, we walked over to the park (the kids actually ran) and we found a nice secluded spot by some trees. I am not sure if the kids or butterflies were more anxious for their “turn”… and fortunately, the wind died down enough so that we hardly noticed it.
The butterflies were a little skittish at first, but when it was Katelyn’s turn, her butterfly Daisy was happy to sit on her finger and enjoy a little sugar water. Katelyn had been a little sad at the idea of letting her butterfly go because she said “I will miss Daisy so much.” But getting to hang out with her first seemed to help ease the transition.
Katelyn’s teacher also let Brooke have a turn. Brooke wasn’t quite sure about it at first but once the butterfly calmly sat on her arm, she thought it was great!
To finish off Freedom Day, the class got to play at the park and do lots of fun activities. Katelyn said it was “the best day ever!” I know Brooke enjoyed it too but she was too worn out that night to tell us how she felt.
Since Freedom Day, we have had a Monarch butterfly that keeps visiting our yard… we like to think that it is Daisy and the fact that she keeps coming back makes me believe it is her…

What a cute idea--my kids' class did ladybugs and they're not nearly as fun to release into the "wild"! Your girls are so cute!
