The Day the Sunflowers Came Out

Kate Brooke & Emily sunflowers 9-27-10aThe girls were so excited when our sunflowers finally bloomed this fall.  Last year, they had one sunflower head per stem, this year on the other hand they were covered with sunflowers.  The girls thought they were so beautiful and so did the bees.

Katelyn & Brooke 9-12-10bWhen they first started to come out, the head on Katelyn’s sunflower was facing away from our house, so the girls loaded up in the jeep and we headed to the other side of the house.

Katelyn's sunflower 9-12-10bKatelyn’s sunflower was so tall that we had to get creative for the picture.  Last year, her flower was as tall as she was… this year, her flower grew quite a bit faster than she did – I am glad she didn’t keep up with it this year.

Brooke's sunflower 9-18-10aKatelyn & Brooke - sunflowers 9-26-10aBrooke was equally excited about her flower, even though it took awhile for it to bloom.  Instead of being the same height as the girls, this year the flowers doubled them in height.

Emily loved checking out the flowers and also went for her first swing while we were admiring the flowers.  She thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with her sisters and really enjoys her swing.

Katelyn and the sunflowers 9-26-10aBy the end of the summer, the leaves were even bigger than Katelyn’s head.  We were all amazed at how well the sunflowers did.  Our next step was to harvest the sunflower heads so we could save some seeds for next year.  Even without their petals, the centers were giant – the Kate & Brooke's sunflower seeds 10-9-10girls loved it and we had a great time with our sunflower project for 2010.  We have enough seeds saved that we will probably have about a million of them next year.  Let me know if you want some seeds – they definitely make for a fun summer long project.
